#6 Trinity Wins Slugfest Over #12 UC-Santa Cruz

Walla Walla, Washington - The sixth-ranked Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team scored a 6-3 victory Saturday over the No. 12 University of California-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs at the Whitman College Quad Tournament.

Trinity (10-4) will play third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 6 p.m. Pacific Time today.

Connor Dunn once again provided the clinch match for the Tigers, winning No. 5 singles 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Dunn clinched Trinity’s 5-4 victory over host Whitman, ranked 15th, in Friday’s opener of the quad event.

The Tigers began Saturday’s matchup by capturing two of the three doubles. Paxton Deuel and Nico Moreno won the No. 1 match 8-1, while Greg Haugen and Jordan Mayer took the No. 2 line 8-2. Clayton Niess and Chas Mayer lost No. 3 doubles 6-4.

Jordan Mayer gave Trinity a 3-1 lead by winning No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-3. The Banana Slugs tightened the match as Aaron Skinner lost 3-6, 2-6 at No. 2 singles. Deuel gave Trinity some breathing room with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles, which was followed by Dunn’s clincher.

Greg Haugen won No. 3 singles 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; while Chas Mayer lost a three-setter 6-1, 6-7, 3-6 at No. 6.
