Men's Tennis Splits Matches Against Schreiner and D-I UTSA

San Antonio - Trinity's men's tennis team split a pair of Saturday matches, beating Schreiner University 9-0 in its home opener, then suffering a narrow 4-3 defeat at Division I University of Texas-San Antonio.

The Tigers started the day with three solid doubles wins over Schreiner, then finished with straight-set wins in singles to earn the shutout.  Trinity had 12 different players earn individual wins in the match - three doubles teams, and six singles matches.

In the match against UTSA, Charlie Curtis and Clayton Niess scored a 6-5 win at No. 3 doubles, but Trinity's top two doubles teams were edged 6-3 and 6-2 to give the Roadrunners the doubles point.

Curtis also nabbed a 6-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against UTSA, while Paxton Deuel (6-4, 6-2 at No. 1) and Jordan Mayer (6-4, 6-5 at No. 5) also scored wins for the Tigers.  Nico Moreno suffered a 6-0, 6-5 loss at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for the Roadrunners.

Trinity’s men will have a rematch with NJCAA champion Tyler Junior College at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14, at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.  Tyler edged Trinity 5-4 on February 1 at the ACU Indoor Invitational at Abilene, Texas.
