Abilene, Texas - The Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team was edged 4-5 Saturday by the national JUCO champion Tyler Junior College Apaches at the ACU Indoor Invitational at Abilene Christian University.
Trinity (2-1), ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III, began the event Friday with victories over Division I Abilene Christian, and McMurry University, a member of Division II.
Saturday’s match began with a Trinity win at No. 3 doubles, as Chas Mayer and Charlie Curtis won 8-6. Tyler JC tied the match by taking an 8-4 victory over Paxton Deuel and Nico Moreno at No. 1 doubles. The Apaches led 2-1 after beating Jordan Mayer and Clayton Niess 8-3 in the No. 2 slot.
Top-ranked Tyler JC increased the lead to 3-1 by winning No. 2 singles, as Aaron Skinner fell 6-2, 6-1. But Deuel kept the Tigers in the match by capturing No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 (tiebreaker instead of a third set). The Apaches won Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, to clinch the dual match. Greg Haugen lost 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Moreno ‘s score was 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 line.
The Tigers did win Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Jordan Mayer came out on top 6-4, 7-6 at No. 5 singles, and Curtis won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.
Trinity will host Tyler Junior College on Friday, February 14, at the Butch Newman Tennis Center,
Next Saturday will mark the Tigers’ home debut as they take on Schreiner University at 9:00 a.m. Trinity will then head to the University of Texas at San Antonio (a Division I program) for a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
