San Antonio - Trinity University Tigers men’s tennis has earned All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
In order to receive ITA All-Academic Team honors, a team must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale. Six Tiger players were also honored as ITA Scholar-Athletes, who amassed a GPA of at least 3.50.
The rising seniors named ITA Scholar-Athletes were Julio Benavides (El Paso, TX/Cathedral High School), business-accounting major, minor in economics; Greg Haugen (Austin, TX/Bowie High School), business and economics major; and Eshan Jayamanne (Colombo, SriLanka / St. Joseph’s College), engineering science major.
Rising juniors who received the accolade were Pablo Diaz Boom (Cancun, Mexico / Instituto Cesare), economics major; Jordan Mayer (San Antonio/Churchill High School), business-accounting major; and Aaron Skinner (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge High School), undeclared major.
Last season, Head Coach Russell McMindes, who has completed four years at the Tigers helm, led Trinity to its fourth straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, in matches played at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.
Coach McMindes also became a four-time SCAC Coach of the Year.
The Tigers won an 18th overall SCAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time. Trinity defeated defeated Ohio Northern (5-0) and Gustavus Adolphus (5-2) at the NCAA Regional in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Williams College beat Trinity 5-1 in the national quarterfinals May 20 at Kalamazoo College, and the Tigers completed the season with a 20-10 record.Skinner later advanced to the NCAA Singles semifinals. He became a national champion in October by winning the ITA National Small College Singles Championship.
