Trinity Men's Tennis Wins Eighth Straight Match
San Antonio – The Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team, ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division III, won its eighth straight match with an 8-1 victory Friday over McMurry at Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Trinity, ranked fourth in the West Region, improved its overall
record to 12-9, and 9-4 in Division III competition. McMurry is
ranked No. 13 in the region.
The Tigers opened Friday’s match by winning the doubles, all
by scores of 8-3. Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal, playing No. 1
doubles, beat Will Davis and Bryan Rainwater. Max Frey and Erick
DelaFuente defeated Daniel Olivares and Levi Cockrell at No. 2
doubles. Ben Carroll and Don Murray were winners at No. 3 doubles
over Tony Williams and Brent Abilez.
Trinity took Nos. 1-5 singles matches.
Cocanougher beat Davis 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, DelaFuente defeated Rainwater 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, and Kowal was a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 (tiebreak instead of third set) winner over Olivares at No. 3. Murray captured No. 4 singles, beating Williams 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 (tiebreak instead of third set), and Andrew Hoing won No. 5, with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abilez. Cockrell won McMurry’s point at No. 6 singles, beating Franklin Davis 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 (tiebreak instead of third set).
The Tigers conclude their regular-season home schedule Saturday
by hosting St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. The Rattlers, members of the
NCAA Division II, are ranked 10th in the South Central
Region.
