Men's Tennis Names Six Players to SCAC All-Tournament Team
San Antonio – After reclaiming the conference title for the first time since 2006, the Trinity University Tiger men earned six slots on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis All-Tournament Team.
Trinity (16-9, 12-4 against NCAA Division III opponents), ranked 14th in the NCAA, beat No. 16 DePauw 5-3 last Sunday in the championship match at North Little Rock, Ark. The Tigers last won the title in 2006. Since that time, DePauw had beaten Trinity three straight times, including a 6-3 win in 2009.
The Tigers, ranked No. 7 in the West Region, played in their 19th consecutive SCAC Championship match, and won their 15th conference crown.
For the second consecutive year, sophomore Max Frey of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall), made the All-Tournament team at No. 1 singles (3-0 record. He was joined by junior Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson), at No. 4 singles (2-0 record). Kowal and junior Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll), earned All-Tournament honors for the second straight year, at No. 1 doubles (3-0 record).
Frey and first-year player Erick DelaFuente of El Paso, Texas (Coronado), garnered a spot at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Ben Carroll of Evansville, Ind. (Reitz Memorial), and junior Don Murray of Plano, Texas (Plano West), made the squad at No. 3 doubles. Both doubles tandems had 3-0 records at Burns Park Tennis Center.
Trinity, led by first-year head coach Russell McMindes, a former Tiger standout player, also gained an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament, to be held May 14-16. A total of 42 squads will compete in regionals throughout the nation, leading to the NCAA Team Championship Tournament May 25-27 at Oberlin, Ohio. The singles and doubles tournaments are slated for May 28-30. Trinity is ranked No. 7 in the West Region, and is 12-4 against Division III opponents. Bids for the team tournament will be announced May 10, and individuals May 12.
