Men's Tennis Beats Rhodes for Seventh Straight Win
Tyler, Texas – The Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team, ranked No. 16 in the nation, won its seventh straight match with a 6-3 SCAC victory Saturday over the Rhodes Lynx.
Trinity (11-9, 4-0 SCAC) had defeated host Texas-Tyler (ranked 30th) and Luther on Friday. The Tigers, ranked fourth in the West Region, now stand at 8-4 in NCAA Division III competition.
The Tigers opened Saturday’s match by winning all three
doubles. Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal, playing No. 1 doubles,
dispatched Ryley Erhardt and Grayson Lucas 8-0. Max Frey and Erick
DelaFuente blanked Morgan Slevin and Sanders Phelps 8-0 at No. 2
doubles. Ben Carroll and Don Murray were 8-6 winners at No. 3
doubles over Jonathon Moreno and Brad Pennington.
Trinity and Rhodes split the singles matches 3-3. But the clincher
for the Tigers came at No. 1 singles as Frey outfought Moreno 4-6,
6-2, 6-1.
Cocanougher beat Erhardt 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Andrew Hoing took No. 6 with a tightly played 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 victory over Phelps.
The Lynx won Nos. 3-5 singles. Slevin beat DelaFuente 7-5, 6-4, Tyler Snedden defeated Kowal 6-4, 6-2, and Lucas was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Murray, respectively.
Trinity returns to Delavan Tennis Stadium Friday for a 3 p.m. match with McMurry, ranked 13th in the region.
