Trinity Men's Tennis Wins Two Matches in Tyler Friday

Tyler, Texas – The Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team, ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division III (fourth in the West Region), won two matches Friday at Texas-Tyler.

Trinity, ranked No. 4 in the West region, shut out the host Texas-Tyler Patriots 9-0. Texas-Tyler is ranked No. 30 nationally, and No. 8 in the region.

Later in the evening, the Tigers then defeated Luther 8-1, and improved to 10-9. Trinity, which has won six straight matches, now stands at 7-4 in Division III competition.

In the opener against Texas Tyler, the No. 1 doubles team of Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal beat David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik 8-5. Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente, playing No. 2 doubles, defeated Brad Fenter and Nick Kreines 8-3. No. 3 doubles went to the Tigers as Don Murray and Ben Carroll edged Joshua Chavez and Adam Chirhart 9-8.

Frey outfought Chirhart 4-6, 7-6, 10-7 (tiebreak instead of third set) in the No. 1 singles match, and Cocanougher won No. 2 singles, beating Kevin Wright 6-4, 6-3. DelaFuente took No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Shaun Maddox, and Kowal was successful at No. 4 singles, beating Fenter 6-3, 6-3. Murray won No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kreines, and Andrew Hoing captured No. 6 singles 6-4, 7-5, defeating Austin Gonzales.

Luther won only No. 3 doubles, as Harry Whitely and Aaron Gerdron beat Carroll and Murray 9-7. Coacanougher and Kowal took No. 1 doubles, beating Max Busch and Ustab Rijal 8-5. Frey and DelaFuente were winners in No. 2 doubles, defeating Scott Sundstrom and Max Piepkorn 8-2.

In singles, from Nos. 1-6, Frey defeated Sundstrom 6-0, 6-3, Cocanougher bested Whitely 6-4, 6-3, DelaFuente beat Rijal 7-5, 6-4, Kowal was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Busch, Murray outlasted Mark Mateski 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 (tiebreak instead of third set), and Hoing rounded out the match 6-0, 6-3 over Gerdron.

The Tigers will take on SCAC opponent Rhodes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
