Trinity Men's Tennis Records Two Shutouts Against SCAC Teams
Georgetown, Texas - The Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III, blanked the host Southwestern Pirates, and the Hendrix Warriors, by scores of 9-0 Saturday in SCAC matches.
Trinity, ranked fourth in the West Region, improved its record to 8-9 overall, and 6-4 in Division III matches. The Tigers also beat Austin College 9-0 on Friday.
The Tigers, who have won four straight matches, began the day with a morning match against the Pirates.
The No. 1 doubles team of Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal beat Dart Beber and Alexander Reinsch 8-1. Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente, playing No. 2 doubles, defeated Alex Lam and Charles Prince 8-5. No. 3 doubles went to the Tigers as Don Murray and Ben Carroll were 8-0 winners over Andrew Olsson and Riley Bunnell 8-0.
Frey beat Lam 6-3, 6-3 in the top singles match, and Cocanougher won No. 2 singles, beating Prince 6-1, 6-0. DelaFuente took No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Reinsch, and Kowal was successful at No. 4 singles, beating Beber 6-1, 6-2. Murray won No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Andy Clarage, and Andrew Hoing captured No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0, defeating Olsson.
In the afternoon, the Tigers took on the Warriors.
The Tigers won all three doubles matches by scores of 8-0. Cocanougher and Kowal beat Michael Gardner and Richie Litterst at No. 1 doubles, Frey and DelaFuente were winners over Austin Kearney and Kent Dunson at No. 2, and the team of Murray/Carroll defeated Ben Thomas and Udai Garimella.
Frey captured No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Gardner, and Cocanougher won No. 2 singles, beating Litterst, also by a score of 6-0, 6-3. DelaFuente defeated Kearney 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, and Kowal dispatched Thomas 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Murray was the No. 5 singles winner, beating Ken Yang 6-1, 6-1. Hoing rounded out the lineup, at No. 6 singles, with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eli Harpst.
Trinity will play three matches at the University of Texas-Tyler next Friday and Saturday. The Tigers meet UT-Tyler, ranked No. 8 in the region, at 9 a.m. Friday. Trinity then takes on 27th-ranked Luther at 3 p.m. The weekend concludes Saturday, as Trinity plays SCAC member Rhodes at 9 a.m.
