Trinity Defeats 12th-Ranked Bowdoin to Finish California Trip

Claremont, Calif. – The 13th-ranked Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team ended its California trip on a winning note, defeating 12th-ranked Bowdoin on Monday.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-9 on the season.

The Tigers captured Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, to start the match. Juniors Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson); and Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll); won No. 1 doubles, beating Jamie Neely and Nicholas Fenichell 8-6. Sophomore Max Frey of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall); and first-year Erick DelaFuente of El Paso, Texas (Coronado); took No. 2 doubles, with an 8-6 win over Josh Cranin and Stephen Sullivan.

Trinity then proceeded to win the top five singles matches.

Frey won No. 1 singles, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sullivan. Cocanougher was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 2, over Fenichell. DelaFuente won No. 3 singles, by defeating Josh Cranin 6-4, 2-6, (10-1). A tiebreak was played instead of a third set. Kowal clinched the dual match by winning No. 4 singles 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, over Neely. Junior Don Murray of Plano, Texas (Plano West), earned the No. 5 singles victory, beating Adam Davis 7-6, 6-3.

The Tigers will next play March 26 against SCAC member Austin College, at Georgetown, Texas.
