Trinity Men's Tennis Loses Twice on California Trip Friday
Redlands, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Redlands Bulldogs beat the No. 13 Trinity Tigers men’s tennis team 6-3 Friday in a dual match on the Redlands campus.
Redlands took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The Tigers Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal won No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory over Cameron Spearman and Anish Nanda.
In singles, Trinity’s Max Frey evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Spearman. Erick DelaFuente pulled the Tigers back to a 3-3 score, by winning No. 3 singles 7-5, 3-0, retired over Darren Dahl. Then, Redlands took Nos. 3-6 singles, with the clincher coming at the No. 4 slot.
Earlier in the day, at Claremont, Calif., ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon edged the Tigers 5-4.
Trinity won two of three doubles, with Cocanougher and Kowal taking No. 1 (9-8), and Frey and DelaFuente winning No. 2 (8-2).
But, Carnegie Mellon went on to win four of the six singles matches (Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5). DelaFuente was a 6-4, 7-6 winner at No. 3 singles. Carnegie Mellon had clinched the match, and Trinity’s Don Murray finished by winning No. 6 singles 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.
Trinity (4-8) plays 15th-ranked California Lutheran at 2 p.m. Pacific Time Sunday, at Thousand Oaks, Calif.
