Tiger Men's Tennis Upsets St. Edward's Tuesday

SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity Tigers men's tennis team, ranked 14th in The NCAA Division III, upset the Division II St. Edward's Hilltoppers (ranked No. 19) 5-4 Tuesday in a dual match at Delavan Tennis Stadium.

Tiger sophomore Max Frey of Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall), clinched the match for Trinity (2-3) at No. 1 singles. Frey beat St. Edward's Ned Boone 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 as the Tigers went up 5-2.

Trinity started the match by taking two of three doubles matches. Senior Bobby Cocanougher of Southlake, Texas (Carroll); and junior Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas (Anderson); beat Mick Walter and Boris Barrios 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Frey and first-year Erick DelaFuente of El Paso, Texas (Coronado), won No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory over Justin Raiti and Ryan Wiggins.

Kowal won No. 4 singles, beating Walter 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Junior Don Murray of Plano, Texas (Plano West), was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Wiggins at No. 6 singles.

Trinity will host the University of the Incarnate Word, ranked 18th in Division II, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
