Georgetown, Texas - The sixth-ranked Trinity men's soccer team recorded its third straight shutout with a 2-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Southwestern University Sunday afternoon.
Trinity controlled possession throughout the game, and cashed in with an early goal in the eighth minute. Neil Verwillow eluded his defender in the box, then found a sliding Austin Michaelis inside the six-yard box to give the Tigers the lead.
The Tigers out-shot Southwestern 11-7 in the first half, but only one of the shots by the Pirates was on goal.
Shortly after Blake Lieberman's save on the only shot on goal of the first half, Christian Sakshaug missed a chance at making it 2-0 in the 17th minute after his shot was deflected and rebounded off the post, but stayed out of the net.
As the first half wound down, Kamran Moussavi drew a hard foul that resulted in a Trinity penalty kick. Jacob Hallenberger's shot from the mark was saved, and Trinity had to settle for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Trinity had two shots on goal in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half, but the game remained 1-0 until Trinity was awarded another penalty in the 74th minute.
Michaelis broke free for a clean shot at the goal, but was dragged down in the box to draw the yellow card. He calmly buried his second goal of the game to seal the victory.
The Tigers wrapped up their sixth shutout of the campaign, and upped their records to 8-1-0 and 4-1-0 SCAC. The Pirates dropped to 3-3-3 and 1-1-3 SCAC.
With his two goals in today's game, Austin Michaelis becomes the Tiger leader with six goals this season.
After picking up the game-winning goals in both games this weekend, Michaelis is tied with Jacob Hallenberger for the team lead in that category as well.
Michaelis has posted back-to-back multi-goal games, having also collected a hat trick Friday night at Texas Lutheran.
With three more saves in today's game, Blake Lieberman has 25 saves this season.
First-year Neil Verwillow amassed his third assist of the season.
Trinity continues its SCAC slate on the road next Friday, at Centenary (LA) College, and Sunday at Austin (TX) College.
