Men's Soccer Upset by Centre in SCAC Tournament

Birmingham, Alabama - The fifth-seeded Centre Colonels upset the No. 1 Trinity Tigers 1-0 in overtime Saturday at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship semifinals.

Centre's Ben Van Nevel scored with only 24 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Defending SCAC champion Trinity, ranked fourth in the nation, had its first loss of the season, and now stands at 14-1-2. Centre, which will take on second-seeded Oglethorpe (a 2-0 winner over No. 6 Southwestern) for the SCAC Championship Sunday, improved to 13-5-1.

The Tigers will now await a probable at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs, which begin Nov. 10.

Trinity had shut out Centre 3-0 on Sept. 30 at Danville, Ky.

Tiger goalkeeper Matt Cardone registered a team season-high six saves in the game. Trinity led Centre 16-9 in total shots, but the Colonels held a 7-5 edge in shots on the mark. The Tigers Roberto Camargo led the team with three shots on goal.
