Top-Ranked Christopher Newport Downs Sixth-Ranked Trinity Saturday
San Antonio - In a battle of two of the premier teams in Division III this season, top-ranked Christopher Newport University defeated No. 6 Trinity 1-0 on Saturday night.
Trinity (8-2-0) lost for just the second time this season, but both defeats have come at the hands of nationally-ranked teams.
The Tigers and Captains played to a scoreless tie through the first half, as both teams fought for chances to score. Trinity out-shot CNU 6-2 in the period.
Christopher Newport finally broke through on a counter-attack in the 58th minute to net the eventual game-winner. Brian Lybert played the ball ahead to Winston Mattheison for the goal, which was pushed just past the reach of goalkeeper Joe Benefield for the Tigers.
In the decisive second half, CNU had 11 shots and held Trinity to just five.
The visiting Captains also got five saves from goalkeeper Justin Wolfe, who was credited with the shutout victory.
Trinity played with just 10 men for the final 15 minutes after a red card was issued, and seven other yellow cards were issued in a physically-demanding game.
Trinity returns to action next Friday against Colorado College, resuming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. The Tigers will also play Austin College on Sunday afternoon to complete the weekend.
