Men's Soccer Blanks Rowan to Open Weekend of Action at Home
San Antonio - The sixth-ranked Tiger men's soccer team defeated Rowan University 3-0 to open up a weekend of non-conference action at Trinity University.
Trinity (8-1-0) scored all three of its goals in the first half, jump-started by first-year Yuri Ribiero's goal just 2:22 into the contest. Ribiero opened conference play last weekend with his first career hat trick, and begins this homestand with the game-winner.
Tommy Barros scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season on an assist from CH Farmer, while Kyle Porter assisted Brian Hines on the final goal of the night - which came in the 29th minute.
Jacob Truitt and Michael Barbosa combined for the shutout in goal, and the Tiger defense allowed just four shots in the game, including just one in the first half.
Trinity's offense ripped off 33 shots in the game - 22 of which came in the second half. Goalkeepers Michael Fanz-Hunter and Michael Boisselle combined for nine saves (eight by Fanz-Hunter) and kept the Tigers scoreless after halftime.
In earlier action at the Trinity Soccer Field, Division III's top-ranked team in Christopher Newport University scored two second-half goals to survive a scare from Southwestern University. The Pirates opened the scoring with a goal in the fifth minute, but the Captains were able to come back and escape with the win.
Tomorrow's action will begin with Southwestern facing off against Rowan, while Trinity hosts Christopher Newport in a battle of Division III powers. The first game is set for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff, while the finale will be at 7:30 p.m.
