Garcia's Hat Trick Leads Trinity Men Over Texas Lutheran

San Antonio – Junior All-America midfielder Zach Garcia led the way with three goals and an assist as the 14th-ranked Trinity Tigers beat the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 8-2 Thursday night at the Trinity Soccer Field.

Garcia's hat trick was the first for Trinity men's soccer since Oct. 26, 2008, when Noe Casanova achieved the feat in a SCAC game against Millsaps.

The Tigers improved to 5-1-0, and scored the most goals in a home game since a 9-1 victory over Millsaps in 2005. Texas Lutheran dropped to 0-4-0, and will host Schreiner on Sunday.

Garcia scored his first goal in the second minute of the non-conference game, on assists by senior midfielder Tommy Barros and junior midfielder Josh Adams. His second goal came in the 35th minute, assisted by first-year forward Brian Hines, as the Tigers led 4-0 going into halftime. Appropriately, Garcia produced the last goal of the game – on a penalty kick in the 88th minute. He now has six goals to his credit this season.

Barros scored in the 27th minute of play, as Adams picked up his second assist of the game. First-year midfielder Yuri Ribeiro fired in a goal in the 32nd minute, with Garcia provided the assist.

The Bulldogs rallied almost immediately in the second half, as senior midfielder Pedro Martinez scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Junior forward Olajide Olagbegi brought Texas Lutheran to 2-4 in the game, with another goal in the 63rd minute.

Four minutes later, Adams scored a goal, with junior defender Grant Shopoff on the assist. Barros recorded his sixth goal of the campaign, in the 68 minute, as senior midfielder Clay Middleton had his first assist of the contest. Sophomore defender Denny Mask gave Trinity a 7-2 lead, in the 72nd minute, and was assisted by Middleton.

Trinity led 27-8 in shots, and 18-5 on goal. The Tigers also held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Tiger sophomore goalkeeper Tim Nelin started the  game, allowing no goals, while saving two shots and logging more than 72 minutes in net.
