Men's Soccer Defeats Schreiner With Second-Half Surge
TRINITY MEN’S SOCCER OPENS UP IN SECOND HALF TO BEAT SCHREINER
San Antonio – The 16th-ranked Trinity University Tigers men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals to beat the Schreiner Mountaineers 4-1 Wednesday night in a season-opening game at the Trinity Soccer Field.
Tiger junior All-America midfielder Zach Garcia broke a 1-1 deadlock by scoring a goal in the 47th minute of play. Junior forward Cameron Hogsett provided the assist, the first of two in the game.
Trinity got on the board first, with a goal in the 10th minute by senior midfielder Tommy Barros, on an assist by Garcia. Thirty seconds later, Schreiner evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by Kenny Benson. Taylor Bontz had the assist.
Sophomore defender Denny Mask, a transfer from North Carolina-Greensboro, gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead, scoring in the 63rd minute. Brian Hines, a first-year forward, had the assist. Hines recorder the final goal of the night, in the 65th minute, on assists from Hogsett and junior defender Grant Shopoff.
Trinity fired up 38 shots, with 16 on goal. Schreiner made five shots, and two on goal. The Tigers led 10-3 in corner kicks.
On Saturday, Trinity travels to Belton, Texas, to meet Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Tigers will take on Texas-Tyler on Sunday, also in Belton. Trinity returns home Thursday, Sept. 16, to host Texas Lutheran.
