San Antonio - Trinity men's basketball has received a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2016-17 Team Academic Excellence Award.
The NABC honors all men's basketball teams which earn a grade-point average of 3.0 or better for the academic year. The program was initiated in 2013, and the Tigers have garnered the accolade all five years.
Trinity advanced to the 2017 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament at Georgetown, Texas. The Tigers came up short 71-65 to host Southwestern University. First-year player Danny Rivara was elected the SCAC Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Year, as well as earning a slot on the All-SCAC Second Team. Rivara became Trinity's first conference Newcomer of the Year. Junior Matt Jones, an All-SCAC Third Team honoree, shelled out a school-record 138 assists. Jones became just one of six players in Trinity history to record 300 or more assists in a career.
The Tigers are led by Head Coach Pat Cunningham, who will begin his 19th season at the helm. Trinity opens its regular-season campaign November 15 by hosting the University of Texas-Dallas.
