Tiger Men Defeat Oglethorpe in SCAC Weekend Opener
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men's
basketball team returned to action after three weeks, and defeated
the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 76-54 in a Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference game on Friday night.
Trinity won its third straight game, and the fifth in the six
match-ups. The Tigers improved to 9-5 overall, and 4-1
SCAC - just a half-game out of first place in the West
Division. Visiting Oglethorpe dropped to 6-9 and 1-5 with the
loss.
Robert Kitzinger poured in 23 points, and tied for the
second-highest individual point total of the season. Kitzinger shot
9-13 from the field, sank 4-8 in three-point range, pulled in four
rebounds, blocked two shots, and made two assists.
Ryan Beall contributed 16 points, on 6-7 shooting from the field,
and 2-3 beyond the arc. Beall also had nine rebounds, accounted for
a game-leading three steals, and chalked up three assists. Zach
Lambert added 14 points, and led the game with five assists.
Alec Pitts led Oglethorpe with 11 points, and Andrew Steioff added
10, along with picking up nine rebounds.
The Tigers led 38-27 at halftime, fueled by 60 percent shooting
from the field. Oglethorpe was limited 42 percent. In the second
half, the Petrels closed to within nine points (40-49), with 11:39
on the clock. The Tigers shot 52 percent in the half, though, and
outscored Oglethorpe 27-14 after that point to claim victory.
Overall, Trinity shot 55.4 percent (31-56) from the field, hit 46.7
percent (7-15) of three-pointers, and had 31 rebounds. Oglethorpe
shot 42.3 percent (22-52) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-23)
from three-point range, and had 29 rebounds. The Tigers also
led 20-2 in fast-break points.
Trinity continues its SCAC weekend Saturday by hosting 19th-ranked
Birmingham-Southern at 8 p.m.
