Trinity Men's Basketball Beats Hardin-Simmons for Second Straight Win
Georgetown, Texas -- The Trinity Tigers men won their second straight game with a 75-60 victory Saturday over the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at the Southwestern/Trinity Classic.
Trinity (2-6) picked up its first win of the season Friday by beating Albion 60-54 at the Robertson Center.
First-year forward Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) again had a scoring surge by producing 11 of his 14 points in the second half. Kitzinger shot 5-9 from the field and made 3-7 in 3-point range for the game. He dropped in 16 of his 19 points in the second half against Albion.
Senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor) added 10 points, hit 4-8 from the field, and pulled in six rebounds, tying for the lead in the game. First-year guard Matt Feldman (Honolulu/Punahou) shot 4-6 and scored nine points, along with dishing out a game-leading three assists. Senior forward Sam Dworkin (Portland, Ore.) also had nine points.
First-year forward Zach Lambert (Frisco, Texas/Centennial) scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and accounted for four steals. Sophomore forward John Boxberger (Austin, Texas/St. Andrew's) also contributed eight points, on 3-6 shooting.
Trinity led 46-32 at halftime, and jumped out to as much as a 24-point lead in the second half. The Tigers outscored the Cowboys 16-6, and led 62-38 on a layup by junior guard Ryan Beall (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) with 13:19 on the clock. Beal scored six points, made four rebounds, and had two assists. The closest Hardin-Simmons came after that mark was 15 points on a 3-pointer by Ryan Carlson at the end of the game.
Hardin-Simmons (5-5) was paced by John Derr with 21 points.
The Tigers shot 49.2 percent (30-61) and limited the Cowboys to 35.2 percent (19-54).
Hardin-Simmons committed 23 turnovers, to 15 for Trinity. The turnovers turned out to be a key element of the game, as Trinity scored 21 points off the Hardin-Simmons change of possession. Trinity recorded 16 steals, and Hardin-Simmons had five.
The Cowboys held a slight 38-36 edge in rebounding.
Trinity returns home Wednesday, Dec. 29, to host Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 p.m. in Sams Gym.
