Men's Basketball Edged by Southwestern on Late Three-Pointer
Georgetown, Texas - Trinity's men's basketball team lost its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Friday night, as Southwestern University hit a three-point basket with less than 10 seconds left.
Trinity (0-6, 0-1) broke a 45-45 tie at 3:57 with five unanswered points, but Southwestern hit a three in the final 90 seconds to make it 50-48 in favor of the Tigers.
After Trinity dropped in a layup seconds later, Southwestern knocked down a pair of free throws with under a minute to play to make it 52-50. The Tigers missed a three with 30 seconds left, setting up the Pirates for a final possession.
Nick Caputo nailed the game-winning three with seven seconds left, and Trinity's final desperation shot missed at the buzzer.
First-year Zach Lambert led all players with 21 points for the Tigers, hitting 8-11 from the field and an equally impressive 5-7 from three-point range.
Luke Caldarera scored nine points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds off the bench, while Ryan Beall finished with four points and four assists. Beall also grabbed six rebounds and a pair of steals.
Caputo led Southwestern with 15 points, hitting 6-13 of his shots and 3-9 from three-point range - including the winning shot. Logan Hurley added 13 points and five rebounds for the Pirates.
Trinity next plays in Georgetown again on December 17 and 18, facing off against Albion and Hardin-Simmons in the Southwestern/Trinity Classic.
