Trinity Falls to Schreiner in Monday's Season Opener
San Antonio -- The Schreiner Mountaineers beat the Trinity Tigers men 78-66 Monday night in a season-opener for both teams in Sams Gym.
It marked the first time Schreiner had beaten Trinity since 1992, and the only victory against 12th-year Tigers Head Coach Pat Cunningham. Since the 1991-92 campaign, the Tigers lead the series 7-2.
Trinity senior forward Luke Caldarera led the Tigers with 12 points and a game-leading nine rebounds. Caldarera, who shot 5-11 from the field, also dished out three assists. Sophomore forward John Boxberger added 11 points and five rebounds. First-year forward Robert Kitzinger made his debut with a 10-point game, while pulling in six rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Beall, who scored three points, chalked up a team-best six assists.
The first-half was a tight affair, with Schreiner holding the largest lead of six points. Trinity went up 30-29, on a 3-pointer by Kitzinger at 1:41, but the Mountaineers outscored the Tigers 6-2 to lead 35-32 at halftime. The Tigers shot 45 percent int he first half, and the
Mountaineers hit 43 percent.
The second half of play was a different story, as Schreiner led by as much as 22 points, including a 65-43 mark at 7:42. Trinity ralled to within eight after that point, keyed by Boxberger's 11 second-half points, and eight by first-year guard Matt Feldman.
Schreiner, though, shot 62 percent in the second half, compared to 38 percent for Trinity. The Mountaineers also hit 6-7 in 3-point range, and the Tigers made only 4-15 in the half.
Mountaineers guard Darren Smith led the game with 19 points, and senior forward Riley Battle added 14. Senior forward Charles Hobbs and junior guard Tyrie Prince each contributed 13 points.
Trinity shot 41 percent for the game, and Schreiner hit 51 percent of its shots. The Mountaineers were effective beyond the arc, at 50 percent, and limited the Tigers to 23 percent. Trinity led 34-31 in rebounding, and held a 10-3 advantage in offensive boards.
The Tigers travel to Spokane, Wash., next weekend to take on Linfield (Ore.) Sunday, and host Whitworth on Monday.
