Oglethorpe Snaps Trinity Men's Win Streak
Atlanta -- The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels beat the Trinity men 78-67 Saturday night in a SCAC game at Dorough Field House, snapping the Tigers' four-game winning streak.
Trinity now stands at 7-8 and 4-3 SCAC. Oglethorpe improved to 9-7 and 5-2.
The tightly played game - the lead changed 16 times - had the Petrels ahead 34-31 at halftime. The Tigers shot 52 percent, and the Petrels hit 39 percent in the half. Trinity's largest lead was by three points (49-46), with 11:23 remaining in the game. After a see-saw period of scoring, where the Tigers led 56-55 at 8:50, the Petrels took the lead for good. Oglethorpe outscored Trinity 23-11 down the stretch to capture the win.
Tiger senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor) and first-year forward Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) each scored 15 points. Caldarera shot 6-11 from the field, grabbed five rebounds, and led the team with four assists. Kitzinger hit 5-11 from the field, and 5-10 beyond the arc.
First-year forward Jonathan Wilt (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) paced the Tigers in rebounds with seven, while scoring nine points.
Joe Kennedy of Oglethorpe led the game with 29 points, and Andrew Steioff added 16. Todd Ward had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
The Tigers shot 45.6 percent (26-57) and the Petrels made 48.3 percent (29-60) of their shots. Oglethorpe held a 36-29 advantage in total rebounds. The Petrels picked up 17 points off turnovers, and the Tigers had 11.
Trinity returns home to Sams Gym Friday, Jan. 21, to host DePauw in an SCAC game. The Tigers play defending conference champion Centre on Saturday, Jan. 22. Each game tips off at 8 p.m.
