Men's Basketball Caps Regular Season With Win Over Dallas
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men wrapped up their regular-season schedule with a 70-47 non-conference victory over the University of Dallas Crusaders Saturday night in Sams Gym.
Trinity, which won its sixth straight game, improved to 15-10 overall. Dallas dropped to 4-20, after the only meeting between the two teams this season.
The Tigers will compete in the eight-team SCAC Championship Tournament next Friday through Sunday at Jackson, Miss. Trinity (11-5 SCAC) is the No. 1 team in the West Division, and will take on Rhodes (No. 4 in the East) in the opening round.
Trinity senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor), playing in his last regular-season home game, led the matchup with a double-double - 21 points and a Tigers season-best 13 rebounds. Caldarera has amassed 1,358 career points, and is now Trinity's seventh-leading all-time scorer. He surpassed Jonathan McNulty (1992-1996) who scored 1,355 points during his career.
Caldarera shot 9-17 from the field, made 1-2 beyond the arc, sank 2-2 free throws, and chalked up four assists on Saturday.
Senior forward Sam Dworkin (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) added 15 points, on 5-9 shooting from the floor, and 3-7 in 3-point range. First-year forward Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) contributed 12 points to the winning cause.
Trinity led 31-21 at halftime, paced by Caldarera's 13 points. The Tigers shot over 52 percent in the second half, and the Crusaders made 38 percent. An early second-half layup by Dallas put the Crusaders within eight points (23-31), but that is as close as they would get. By the time five minutes showed on the clock, Trinity had racked up a 21-point lead (63-42).
Zach Matthews led Dallas with 13 points, and Ross Davidson scored 12.
Trinity shot 48 percent (24-50) from the field, and Dallas hit 35.4 percent (17-48). The Tigers went 42.1 percent (8-19) in 3-point land, and the Crusaders were limited to 25 percent (4-16).
Rebounding made a huge difference in the game, as the Tigers led 46-17 in total rebounds, and 15-4 in offensive boards.
