Trinity Finishes SCAC Campaign With Win Over Southwestern
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men concluded their SCAC campaign with a 73-68 win over the Southwestern Pirates Friday night in Sams Gym.
Trinity (14-10, 11-5 SCAC), which won its fifth straight game, will be the No. 1 seed from the West in the SCAC Championship Tournament next Friday through Sunday, Feb. 27, at Jackson, Miss. Southwestern dropped to 6-19 and 4-12. The Pirates edged the Tigers 53-52 last Dec. 3 at Georgetown, Texas.
Tiger senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor) led the game with 26 points, one point shy of tying his team season-best performance. Caldarera shot 8-17 from the floor and pulled in six rebounds.
First-year forward Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) added 18 points, on 6-11 shooting from the field, and going 4-9 in 3-point range. Kitzinger also had five rebounds. Zach Lambert (Frisco, Texas/Centennial), a first-year forward, scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Ryan Beall (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos) led the Tigers with seven rebounds and four assists.
The Tigers held a slim 31-29 lead at halftime. The game was definitely a see-saw affair in the second half, until Lambert broke the tie with a bucket with less than five minutes remaining. The Pirates offense came to life in the second stanza, shooting nearly 57 percent from the field.
Robbie Hanley of Southwestern recorded a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Logan Hurley accounted for 19 points and nine rebounds.
Trinity shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field, and Southwestern hit 43.1 percent (22-51). The Tigers led 36-30 in total rebounds, and 16-11 in offensive boards.
The Tigers finish off their regular season Saturday by hosting the University of Dallas in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
