Tiger Men Earn Fourth Straight Win to Remain Atop SCAC West
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men their
fourth straight game with a 62-52 SCAC victory over the Austin
College Kangaroos Sunday afternoon at Sams Gym.
Trinity, which beat Colorado College 66-56 Friday night, improved
its record to 13-10 and 10-5 SCAC. The Tigers are atop the
conference West Division standings, and earlier qualified for the
SCAC Championship Tournament Feb. 25-27 at Jackson, Miss. Trinity
beat Austin College 90-80 in early January at Sherman, Texas.
The Kangaroos dropped to 10-12 and 6-8 SCAC after Sunday's
loss.
Tiger senior forward Luke Caldarera (Houston/Katy Taylor) led the
game with 16 points and nine rebounds. He also recorded three
steals. Caldarera now has 1,311 career points, and stands 10th
among Trinity's all-time scoring leaders. He needs 31 points to tie
ninth-place Bobby Murphy (1970-1974).
First-year forward Robert Kitzinger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) added 10
points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Sophomore forward Heath Hopson (Lampasas, Texas/Lampasas)
contributed eight rebounds, while scoring four points. Jonathan
Wilt (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) led the game with four steals, and
produced seven points.
Trinity led 33-23 at halftime, following a nip-and-tuck battle
during the first 17 minutes. The Tigers outscored the 'Roos 8-1 in
the final three minutes of the half.
The Tigers jumped out to a 21-point lead (59-38) with five minutes
left in the game. After that point, Austin College came no closer
than eight (52-60) with 40 seconds remaining.
Scott Straley paced Austin College with 15 points, and Josh
Saunders had 10.
Trinity shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field and Austin College
hit 38.8 percent (19-49). The two teams were even in rebounding,
with 37 apiece.
Turnovers made a difference in the game, as the 'Roos committed 22,
and Trinity made 14. The Tigers had 22 points off turnovers, and
Austin College scored 15. Trinity's bench again proved to be
effective, as the subs scored 22 points. The Kangaroo bench managed
only eight points.
Trinity will host Southwestern in a SCAC game Friday, and wraps up
its regular season Saturday with a non-conference match-up against
the University of Dallas. Tip off is at 8 p.m. each day.
