Trinity Earns Tournament Split With Win Over Dominican

San Antonio - The Trinity University Tigers men snapped a two-game losing streak with a 74-56 victory Tuesday over the Dominican University (Ill.) Stars at the Trinity/Southwestern Holiday Classic in Sams Gym.

Trinity (3-6) produced a season-high in points, and shot a team-best 50 percent from the field (and 3-point range), as the Tigers went 1-1 at their tournament. Illinois Wesleyan beat the Tigers 96-67 Monday in the opening game. Illinois Wesleyan beat Southwestern 91-75 in Tuesday's first game.

Tiger sophomore forward Gil Melchior of Luxembourg led the team with 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field, 1-4 in 3-point range, and sinking both free throw attempts. Melchior was elected to the All-Tournament Team.

Senior guard Michael Tobolowsky of Dallas (Greenhill School), added 13 points, shooting 5-8 from the field, and 3-4 beyond the arc. Tobolowsky also had two assists. Senior forward Bryant Wilson of Dallas (Jesuit College Prep) rounded out the Tigers' double-figure scorers, with 12 points. Wilson was 4-8 in 3-point range, and dished out two assists to go with two blocked shots.

Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor) added nine points, and led the Tigers in rebounds, with seven. He also accounted for two steals. Senior center Peter Garatoni of San Antonio (MacArthur) contributed eight points and six rebounds. Bart Taylor, a senior guard from San Antonio (St. Mary's Hall), made seven assists, to go with his three points.

Trinity led 42-28 at halftime, shooting 50 percent to 42 percent for Dominican. The Tigers held as much as a 17-point lead (42-25) with 1:58 remaining in the half. The second half belonged to the Tigers, again shooting 50 percent from the field. Trinity racked up a 21-point lead, 72-51, with 4:03 on the clock.

The Tigers limited the Stars to 41 percent shooting in the game, and held a slight 30-29 edge in rebounding. Trinity forced 19 turnovers, while committing only 11.

Dominican (2-8) was paced by Marquis Turley with 19 points. Turley was an All-Tournament Team selection.

Jordan Zimmer of Illinois Wesleyan was named Tournament MVP, and his teammate, Sean Johnson, also made the All-Tournament Team. Anthony Cox and Travis Barber of Southwestern were All-Tournament selectees.

Trinity continues its SCAC campaign Saturday by hosting Austin College at 3 p.m. The Tigers, 0-1 in conference play, will then host Colorado College at 2 p.m. Sunday in a SCAC game.
