Men's Basketball Defeats Schreiner to Open Tournament

Georgetown, Texas - Junior forward Luke Caldarera recorded a double-double as the Trinity Tigers men beat the Schreiner Mountaineers 59-45 Saturday in the opening game of the Southwestern-Trinity Pre-Holiday Classic at Robertson Center.

The Tigers (2-4) returned to action for the first time since Dec. 3, when Southwestern beat Trinity in a SCAC game at Sams Gym. Trinity now leads the series with Schreiner 5-0, under head coach Pat Cunningham, including a 61-52 victory Nov. 21 in Kerrville, Texas.

Caldarera, from Houston (Katy Taylor), scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in Saturday's game. He shot 6-13 from the field, and also had a team-high four assists. Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), also scored 12 points, on 5-10 shooting. Beall accounted for four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Senior center Peter Garatoni of San Antonio (MacArthur) scored eight points, and had three steals and one assist. Bryant Wilson, a senior forward from Dallas (Jesuit College Prep), stole the ball three times, and added six points.

The Tigers led 25-20 at halftime, starting with a 9-1 run in the first three minutes of the game. Schreiner led 15-11 at 7:44, but never again gained the advantage. Trinity outscored Schreiner 20-9 and led by 16 points, 45-29, with 8:57 on the clock. The Mountaineers came no closer than 12 points after that mark.

Trinity shot 35 percent in the game, and Schreiner hit 37 percent. The Tigers hit 32 percent in 3-pointers, and limited the Mountaineers to 20 percent. Trinity held a sizeable 46-35 advantage in rebounding, including a 22-8 margin in offensive boards.

The Tigers wrap up the two-day event Sunday, with a 2:00 p.m. game against Concordia. The Trinity-Southwestern Holiday Classic Dec. 28-29 will mark the Tigers' return home.
