Austin College Beats Trinity Men

San Antonio - A Trinity University Tigers second-half rally fell short as the Austin College Kangaroos won 69-59 Saturday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game in Sams Gym.

Trinity (3-7, 0-2 SCAC), trailed by 19 points, 22-41, at halftime. Austin College (8-2, 3-0 SCAC), went on a 17-5 scoring run in the last 4 ½ minutes of the half. The Kangaroos shot 52 percent in the first half, to 35 percent by the Tigers. Trinity went to work in the second half and closed to seven points, 55-62, with 1:27 on the clock. The Tigers, who shot 47 percent in the second half (to 35 percent), brought the score to 57-64 at 1:05, but the Kangaroos closed out the game.

Tiger senior guard Michael Tobolowsky of Dallas (Greenhill School) was the only Trinity player in double figures, with 15 points. Tobolowsky shot 6-13 from the field, and tied for the lead in the game with nine rebounds. Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor) also pulled in nine rebounds, along with scoring eight points.

First-year forward Heath Hopson of Lampasas, Texas (Lampasas); and sophomore forward Gil Melchior of Luxembourg; each contributed nine points. Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), led the Tigers with four assists, while scoring six points.

Kola Alade of Austin College led the game with 22 points, and Arron Mewbourn added 12.

The Kangaroos shot 44 percent in the game, to the Tigers 40 percent. Trinity led 42-33 in rebounding, but had 10 turnovers, to only four for Austin College.

The two teams will play again Feb. 12 in Sherman, Texas.

Trinity hosts Colorado College in a SCAC game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
