Men's Basketball Defeats Rhodes to Finish SCAC Weekend Sweep
San Antonio - The Trinity Tiger men's basketball team won its second consecutive game with a 65-49 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory Saturday night over the Rhodes Lynx in Sams Gym.
Trinity, in fourth place in the SCAC Western Division, upped its record to 8-11 and 5-6 SCAC. Rhodes dropped to 8-11 and 3-8 SCAC.
Tiger junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), led the game with 18 points. Caldadera also pulled in a team-best nine rebounds, and made one blocked shot. He shot 8-19 from the field, and made 2-4 from 3-point range.
Sophomore forward Gil Melchior of Luxembourg added 11 points, shooting 4-8 from the field. Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), scored nine points, and made four assists to go with two steals. Michael Tobolowsky, a senior guard from Dallas (Greenhill School), had seven points, six rebounds, and a game-best five steals. Senior guard Bart Taylor of San Antonio (St. Mary's Hall) led the game with five assists, and scored seven points (3-6 shooting).
The Tigers led the Lynx 33-21 at halftime, leading by as much as 14 points (33-19, 1:21). In the second half, Trinity held a 24-point lead (56-32, 5:44).
Reid Hamilton paced Rhodes with 17 points. Kory Kilpatrick led the game with 11 rebounds, while scoring six points.
Trinity shot 39 percent from the field, to 38 percent for Rhodes. The Tigers forced 18 Lynx turnovers, while committing only six. Rhodes held a 39-38 edge in rebounding, but the Tigers led 13-9 in offensive boards.
The Tigers conclude their regular-season home schedule with two SCAC games. Trinity will host Hendrix at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, and Millsaps at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.
