Trinity Men Edge Birmingham-Southern in Overtime Thriller
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men edged the Birmingham-Southern Panthers 68-65 in overtime Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Sams Gym.
Trinity, down 62-63 with 1:20 in the overtime period, took the a two-point lead as sophomore guard Ryan Beall sank a 3-pointer, with 50 seconds on the clock. Beall was fouled on the next possession, making one of two free throws to give the Tigers a 66-63 lead with 22 seconds remaining. That lead was cut to one (66-65) after Aaron Parr hit a jumper at the 12-second mark for the Panthers. Trinity senior guard Michael Tobolowsky made one of two free throws, to make it a two-point game with 10 seconds left.
The game was definitely not decided, though, as Birmingham-Southern had possession of the ball. But, Trinity senior guard Terrance Blakely made a crucial steal on defense, and was immediately fouled. Blakely sank one of two free throws, and the Tigers led 68-65 with six seconds on the clock. The Panthers made a run at a bucket, but Blakely, who had a game-best four steals, stole the ball again with two seconds left to snap a two-game losing streak for the Tigers.
Trinity led 38-23 at halftime on 52 percent shooting, to 25 percent for Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers' second-half percentage was only 29 percent, as the Panthers (shooting 28 percent) outscored Trinity 33-18, to tie the score at 56-56 in regulation.
The Tigers improved to 7-11 and 4-6 SCAC, while the Panthers dropped to 15-3 and 7-3 SCAC.
Beall, from Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), contributed 11 points, on 3-5 shooting, along with a game-leading seven assists, and nine rebounds.
Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), led the game with 19 points, hitting 7-15 from the field, and sinking all four free throw attempts.
Tobolowsky, from Dallas (Greenhill School), recorded a double-double, with 12 points and 14 rebounds - the last of which was on the offensive glass and led directly to Beall's clutch three-pointer in the final minute. He shot 3-6 from the field, and 3-5 in 3-point range. Tobolowsky also produced four assists.
Birmingham-Southern was paced by Roger Williams, who scored 13 points.
The Tigers shot 44 percent from the field, to 30 percent for the Panthers. Trinity held a 38-37 edge in rebounding, and each team had 22 turnovers.
Trinity hosts Rhodes in a SCAC game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
