DePauw Pulls Away Late to Defeat Trinity Men's Basketball Saturday
Greencastle, Ind. - The Trinity Tigers men lost their second straight game as the DePauw Tigers won 87-72 on Saturday night in a SCAC game at Neal Fieldhouse.
Trinity, edged 50-57 by Centre on Friday night at Danville, Ky., now stands at 6-11 and 3-6 SCAC (fifth place, Western Division). DePauw won its sixth consecutive game, and improved to 14-4 and 7-2 SCAC (first place, Eastern Division).
The two teams played a tight first half, with DePauw leading 36-32 at the halftime mark. DePauw shot 58 percent in the half, and Trinity hit 50 percent. The Trinity Tigers led by as much as six points, 12-6, with 15:03 remaining. Trinity closed to within three points in the second half, 59-62, on a free throw by senior post Peter Garatoni at 7:12. DePauw went on a 9-0 run and widened the lead to 12 points, 71-59, at 4:07. The DePauw Tigers upped their lead by 19 points, 82-63, at 1:15. Shooting in the second half was a different story, as Trinity hit 42 percent, to 65 percent for DePauw.
Garatoni, from San Antonio (MacArthur), registered a career-high 17 points, shooting 8-11 from the field. He also four rebounds, and one blocked shot.
Junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), scored 11 points, along with picking up six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Senior forward Bryant Wilson of Dallas (Jesuit College Prep), also added 11 points, hitting 4-6 from the field, and 3-5 in 3-point range. Senior guard Michael Tobolowsky of Dallas (Greenhill School) scored 10 points.
Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), led the game with eight assists, while scoring six points. Beall also led in rebounds, with seven.
Sean Haseley led DePauw with 19 points. Tom Callen and Steve Lemasters each added 17 points.
Trinity shot 45 percent in the game, and DePauw made 62 percent of its shots. The DePauw Tigers also went 65 percent beyond the arc, to 38 percent for Trinity. The Tigers from Texas held a 26-24 edge in rebounding.
The Trinity Tigers return home for two back-to-back SCAC games, starting Friday, Jan. 29, with Birmingham-Southern. Trinity hosts Rhodes on Saturday, Jan. 30. Both games tip off at 8 p.m. in Sams Gym. The Rhodes game was moved from Sunday, Jan. 31.
