Trinity Men Snap Losing Streak With Win Over Sewanee
San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men beat Sewanee: The University of the South Tigers 65-46 Sunday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game in Sams Gym.
Trinity, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 6-9 and 3-4 SCAC. Sewanee dropped to 3-12 and 0-7 SCAC.
Trinity Tiger junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), led the contest with 15 points, shooting 7-11 from the field and 1-3 in 3-point range. Caldarera also accounted for a team-best six rebounds, and had three steals, two assists, and one block.
Sophomore guard Ryan Beall of Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), scored 10 points, hitting 3-4 from the field, and 4-5 free throws. Beall also had four rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Senior guard Bart Taylor of San Antonio (St. Mary's Hall), produced 10 points, shooting 4-8 from the field, and 2-4 in 3-pointers.
Senior guard Michael Tobolowsky of Dallas (Greenhill School) dished out five assists, to go with three steals and four points. Senior center Peter Garatoni of San Antonio (MacArthur) had five rebounds and two steals, along with four points.
Trinity led 36-22 at halftime, led by Caldarera's 10 first-half points. Sewanee closed to within six points (17-23, 4:31), but Trinity outscored the Tennessee Tigers 13-5 to finish off the half. In the second half of the game, Trinity led by as much as 22 points (58-36), on a jumper by Caldarera at 7:04. Sewanee came no closer than 17 points (44-61, 2:50), after that mark.
Garrett Hollingsworth was Sewanee's only double-figure scorer, with 11 points. Andrew Little led the game in rebounds, with seven.
Trinity shot 43 percent in the game, to 40 percent by Sewanee. The Trinity Tigers had only six turnovers, and forced 28 on Sewanee. The opponents led 37-27 in rebounding, but Trinity held a 26-16 advantage in defensive boards.
The Trinity Tigers will play two SCAC games on the road next weekend, beginning Friday against defending champion Centre in Danville, Ky. DePauw will be the Tigers' opponent next Saturday in Greencastle, Ind. The Tigers return home Friday, Jan. 29, to host Birmingham-Southern in a SCAC game. Trinity takes on Rhodes in a conference match-up Saturday, Jan. 30. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 31.
