Oglethorpe Holds Off Late Rally By Trinity Men

San Antonio - The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels stymied a late surge by the Trinity men to beat the Tigers 66-62 Friday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game in Sams Gym.

The Tigers, who lost their second straight game, now stand at 5-9 and 2-4 SCAC. Oglethorpe improved to 9-5 and 4-2 SCAC.

Trinity, down by as much as 13 points in the second half (34-47, 11:58), outscored Oglethorpe 28-17 and closed to two points (62-64, 4 seconds). Senior guard Michael Tobolowsky sank a 3-pointer at the 4-second mark. Oglethorpe's Alec Pitts was fouled, and sank two free throws with two seconds remaining. Trinity's rally came at 4:54, when sophomore guard Ryan Beall sank a 3-pointer, as the Tigers closed to 45-56. Trinity was down 57-63, with 25 seconds on the clock, when Beall brought the Tigers to within four points (59-63), with a rebound and layup at the 10-second mark. Oglethorpe, which shot 55 percent in the first half (to 38 percent),  led 39-26 at halftime.

Tiger junior forward Luke Caldarera of Houston (Katy Taylor), led the game with 17 points. Caldarera shot 7-17 from the field (3-6 in 3-point range), pulled in six rebounds, made four assists, and had a game-best two steals.

Tobolowsky, from Dallas (Greenhill School), added 14 points, five rebounds, and an assist. Beall, from Santa Barbara, Calif. (Dos Pueblos), scored 12 points, hitting 5-6 from the field, 2-2 beyond the arc, and had four rebounds, two assists, and one block. Senior guard Bart Taylor of San Antonio (St. Mary's Hall), accounted for four assists.

Alex Richey of Oglethorpe scored 15 points, and Todd Ward added 14.

Trinity shot 43 percent, to 42 percent for Oglethorpe. The Petrels hit 79 percent of free throws (15-19), and the Tigers made 67 percent (8-12). Trinity held a 31-30 edge in rebounding.

The Tigers host Sewanee: The University of the South at 2 p.m. Sunday in a SCAC game.
