Carla Spenkoch has been at the helm of the Trinity University golf program since 1997.
Coach Spenkoch primarily focuses on the Tiger women’s golf team. Trinity’s women won the 2010 team championship at the Sen. Eddie Lucio Collegiate Golf Invitational at Laguna Vista, Texas.
She took the 2003 Tiger men’s team to the NCAA Division III Championships. It marked Trinity’s first NCAA invitation since 1975 and the Tigers came in at 18th place. Simon Thompson finished 15th individually to earn Third Team All-America honors. Brian Sparks became an Honorable Mention All-American.
Coach Spenkoch has led the Tigers to nine top-five finishes at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, including the 2005 team title. Trinity finished as runner-up in 2002 and 2008. Twelve of coach Spenkoch’s players have received All-SCAC recognition.
Golf Digest, one of the sport’s leading publications, recognized the Tigers in the top-five nationally in its 2006 collegiate “academic first” rankings. Trinity (84.597 points) was ranked No. 2 in the nation, right behind Princeton (85.290). The Tigers were immediately ahead of Yale, Linfield (Ore.) and Pennsylvania. In the “golf first rankings,” Trinity was rated ninth with 65.445 points.
Coach Spenkoch is also a highly respected teaching professional at the Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio. Before joining the staff at the Quarry, she was employed in the same capacity by Precision Golf Center, also in San Antonio.
She was named as one of the Top Texas Women Instructors by Texas Golf for Women magazine, honoring the 20 most qualified teachers in the state.
Coach Spenkoch graduated from the University of Texas-Austin in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She served as captain for the Lady Longhorn golf team during the 1975 and 1976 seasons and was voted the team’s most valuable athlete in 1976.
She is a Life Member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association Teaching and Club Division. Coach Spenkoch also captured the Austin City Women’s Amateur Championship in 1976.
Craig McConnell

Craig McConnell has been the men's head coach since 2010.
In his first year as assistant coach, he guided the Tiger men to an especially good season, as they were ranked No. 20 by the Golf World/Nike Division III Coaches’ Poll. Trinity also won two tournament team titles, the Alamo City Classic (hosted by Trinity) and the ConCan Intercollegiate Classic.
Jonathan Alden won individual honors at both the John Bohmann Memorial and ConCan Intercollegiate. Ryan Barry took the Alamo City Classic medalist honors. Trinity finished fifth at the SCAC Championships, and Alden earned All-SCAC honors for the fourth straight year.
Coach McConnell is a former Trinity team captain and four-year letter winner. He earned All-SCAC honors in 2005 and 2007. He was a key member of Trinity’s 2005 SCAC Championship team.
He was named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team in 2006, and also received SCAC Academic Honor Roll distinction in 2004, 2005 and 2007.
Coach McConnell graduated with honors from Trinity in 2007, with a B.A. in business administration. He was a member of Trinity’s Dean’s List, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was a President’s Scholarship recipient.
He continued his education at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he earned a graduate degree in kinesiology. Coach McConnell was a volunteer assistant golf coach at Lamar University, where he participated in recruiting and team administration. He also worked as an assistant at the Beaumont Country Club.
In addition, coach McConnell is a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Level 2 Golf Instructor.
A native of Beaumont, Texas, coach McConnell is a graduate of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School where he earned All-State golf honors.
