Trinity Men and Women's Golf Head to SCAC Championships

San Antonio – The Trinity University Tigers men’s and women’s golf teams will compete Friday through Sunday at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Stone Mountain, Ga.

The 54-hole tournaments get under way each day at 8 a.m. Eastern Time, at the Stonemont Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones.

Hosting Oglethorpe is the defending men’s champion, and Southwestern is the reigning women’s titleist.

The Tiger men finished fourth at last year’s event, held at Tunica, Miss. Senior Jonathan Alden of Austin, Texas (Westlake) finished third last season, just three strokes behind medalist Scott Pugh of Oglethorpe. Trinity’s women placed fifth at the Tunica National Golf Course.

Trinity is led by 12th-year head coach Carla Spenkoch, who focuses on the Tiger women’s team. Assistant coach Craig McConnell places emphasis on the men’s team.

The Tiger men have received a ranking of No. 20 by the Golf World/Nike Division III Coaches’ Poll.

Both Trinity teams have had excellent seasons leading up to the SCAC Championships.

The Tiger men’s captured their second tournament of the season, capturing the 13-team TLU ConCan Intercollegiate Classic Tuesday by 11 strokes in March. Alden won medalist honors by with a 4-over 148 total

Trinity’s men also won their Alamo City Classic team title in October at River Crossing Golf Club in Spring Branch, Texas. Trinity captured the team event by seven strokes over NCAA Division II St. Mary’s University. Sophomore Ryan Barry of Del Mar, Calif. (Torrey Pines), took individual honors by winning a three-hole playoff with two other golfers.

The first individual title for Trinity came in September, at the TLU (Texas Lutheran University) John Bohmann Memorial in Seguin, Texas. Alden won the first playoff hole with a par. Alden finished with a 7-under 209 in regulation at the 54-hole tournament. The Tigers finished third as a team.

The Tiger women won the Sen. Eddie Lucio Collegiate Golf Invitational in February, at Laguna Vista, Texas. Trinity shot a 691, beating the host and runner-up Texas-Brownsville (702).

In the SCAC Championships, Trinity’s men have brought home three titles (1994, 1996, and 2005).

Coach Spenkoch, in addition to guiding Trinity to the 2005 SCAC crown, took the 2003 Tiger men's team to the NCAA Division III Championships. It marked Trinity's first NCAA invitation since 1975.

Trinity’s women won the SCAC Championship in 1995.
