Women's Golf Leads After Opening Day at UT-Brownsville; Men's Team Third
Laguna Vista, Texas - The Trinity women's golf team was the first-round leader Sunday at the Sen. Eddie Lucio Collegiate Golf Invitational at the South Padre Island Golf Club, while the men's team is in third place.
Trinity, opening its spring season, shot a first-round 344 at the par-72 event hosted by the University of Texas-Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. Texas Lutheran is in second place (347), and UT-Brownsville is third (354).
The men's team shot a first-round 304 at the par-72 tournament hosted by the University of Texas-Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. UT-Brownsville is the leader (293) and Our Lady of the Lake is in second place (299). The University of the Southwest stands in fourth place (310), Texas A&M International is fifth (329), and the second UT-Brownsville entry is sixth (338).
For the women, Tiger first-year golfer Madison Wallender of Spring Branch, Texas (Smithson Valley), shot a 10-over-par 82. Wallender is three strokes behind the leader, Andrea Cadriel of UT-Brownsville (79), and one behind second place Angela Aufderhaar of Texas Lutheran (81).
Seniors Olivia Kotter of Akron, Ohio (Firestone); and Anne Wooton of Baltimore (Friends School); are tied for fifth place, with 86s.
Sophomore Julia Orrange of Georgetown, Texas (Georgetown), is ninth, shooting a 90. Junior Emma Herzog of Katy, Texas (Cinco Ranch), is in 10th place, with a score of 91.
Trinity men's senior Chase Clayton of Bakersfield, Calif. (Garces Memorial); and first-year golfer Warren Taylor of Newton, Pa. (Peddie); are tied for fourth place with 1-over-par 73s. Aaron Flores of Our Lady of the Lake is the first-round leader, at 3-under 69.
Senior Nash Kassam of Vancouver, British Columbia, is tied for 14th place, with a 6-over 78. Jonathan Alden, a senior from Austin, Texas (Westlake); and sophomore Ryan Barry of Del Mar, Calif. (Torrey Pines), stand in 17th place with 8-over 80s.
Both the men's and women's tournaments will conclude on Monday.
