Tiger Football Team Hands Birmingham-Southern its First Loss of 2010

San Antonio - The Trinity football team broke its two-game losing streak with a strong 38-28 victory over previously unbeaten Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity (2-2, 0-2 SCAC) used a 21-point second quarter to pull ahead for good in the game, which was the first road game of the season for the Tigers.

 Preseason All-American Garrett Biel kicked the third-longest field goal in Trinity history to put the Tigers up 3-0 late in the first quarter.  It is his third field goal of 40 or more yards this season.

After the Panthers took the lead on a 14-play drive early in the second quarter, Trinity answered less than 90 seconds later with a touchdown from senior running back Kyle Lewis.

Lewis enjoyed a career day on the ground for Trinity, racking up 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 25 carries.  

Later in the quarter, quarterback Robert Davidson plunged across the goal line from a yard out to make it 17-7 in favor of Trinity, but Birmingham-Southern answered back with a 59-yard catch-and-run that put the home team right back in the game just 2:34 before halftime.  That would prove to be 25 seconds more than Trinity would need for another score, as Tiger first-year running back Desmond King caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Davidson to make it 24-14.

Neither team was able to do much until late in the third quarter when Lewis scored his second touchdown of the day to put the Tigers in control.

Birmingham-Southern did make a late push, scoring early in the fourth quarter, but King scored his second touchdown of the day - this on a 30-yard run - with 3:20 remaining to put the Tigers up 38-21.  The Panthers added a score with 35 seconds left, and also got the onside kick, but the Tigers had already sealed the win.

Three first half turnovers plagued Birmingham-Southern, leading directly to 10 of Trinity's 24 points in the first two quarters.  The Tiger offense piled up 412 yards of offense, including 248 on the ground.  Birmingham-Southern was held to just 297 yards of offense and only 176 passing on 16-24 attempts.

Ben Robinson and Jarrod Burns finished with 12 tackles each to lead Trinity's defensive effort, and both Burns and Greg Kerr recorded sacks in the game.  Robinson finished with 3.0 tackles for loss to lead the Tigers.

King finished with 66 yards rushing on 11 carries, as well as catching two passes for 52 yards.  He scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown in his first game with the Tigers.

Davidson finished 5-10 passing for 75 yards and a touchdown, and both Caleb Urban and Daniel South caught three passes each.  One of South's receptions came on a 41-yard connection with Urban, who finished with 30 yards receiving, 41 yards passing, and 17 yards rushing in the game.

Trinity will be on the road again next week, but will stay in the state of Texas.  The Tigers travel to nearby Seguin to face off with Texas Lutheran University at 1:00 p.m.
