Garrett Biel Among Honorees for Placekickers Award
San Antonio – Trinity University Tigers
sophomore kicker Garrett Biel is a September honoree of the Fred
Mitchell Award, for excellence on the football field and in the
community.
Biel, from Clayton, Calif. (De La Salle), leads the Tigers in
scoring with 19 points. He has connected on 4-4 field goals in
three games, and made 7-9 PATs. Biel’s 48-yard field goal
against Rhodes tied for the third-longest in Trinity history. His
45-yard FG against Millsaps tied for the eighth-longest in Tiger
history. He ranks fifth in school field goals made (21) and
attempted (23), in his second season of competition. Biel also
holds the highest-ever Trinity field goal percentage (91.3
percent).
Biel was earlier selected as a Preseason All-American by
D3football.com.
In 2009, Biel was elected to the D3football.com All-America Third
Team, the All-South Region Team, and to the All-Southern Collegiate
Athletic Conference First Team. Biel led the NCAA Division III in
field goals made last season, connecting on 17 of 19.
A young man with a strong sense of community service, Biel assists
families unable to care properly for their dogs. He volunteers with
a San Antonio organization which distributes coupons, dog food,
leashes, toys and more. In addition, Biel mentors youth
place-kickers at De La Salle, his former high school in
Clayton.
The recipient of the inaugural Fred Mitchell Award will be
announced in mid-December. The award is named for Fred Mitchell,
the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University
Hall-of-Famer, author, philanthropist, and Chicago Tribune sports
columnist. A blue-ribbon panel evaluates place-kickers nominated by
their schools. Included on the panel are Lou Holtz, Paul Hornung,
Marv Levy, Steve McMichael, Don Pierson and Gale Sayers.
Thirty-two place kickers were chosen for September honors.
Nominations are accepted from Football Championship Subdivision
schools, the NCAA II and III teams, and the NAIA.
The Tigers (1-2, 0-2 SCAC) travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a
Saturday SCAC game against Birmingham-Southern College at noon. The
game does not count in SCAC standings this season, as
Birmingham-Southern is in transition from Division I to Division
III.
