Trinity Holds off Centre to Win Final Home Game

San Antonio - The Trinity football team finished off its home schedule with a 27-17 win over Centre College on Saturday afternoon.

Trinity (6-3, 3-2 SCAC)  took a 10-0 lead after scoring its first touchdown of the day early in the second quarter.  The team was just three points ahead by the end of the first half, though, thanks in large part to fumbling on three consecutive possessions in the quarter.

During halftime, the Trinity Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2009 was inducted, including former Tiger football stars Mike Scott and Clyde Glosson.

The Tigers seemed to regain control of the game in the third, overcoming a failed fake field goal by capitalizing on a Centre fumble to go ahead 17-7 midway through the quarter.  Centre was able to add a field goal to make it 17-10 heading into the decisive fourth quarter.

Trinity's Kyle Trella, the Division III leader in punting, was able to pin Centre inside the five yard line early in the quarter, but a 97-yard touchdown pass by Centre sent a shock through E.M. Stevens Stadium.

With the momentum slipping away from the hometown Tigers, running back Chris Baer answered Centre's long score with a 64-yard touchdown run that put Trinity ahead for good.  Baer was a nearly unstoppable force in the game, picking up 209 yards and the TD on just 19 carries (11.0 yards/rush).

Caleb Urban and Riley Curry caught five passes each from QB Robert Davidson.  Davidson finished the game 13-19 for 122 yards and a touchdown - a 23-yard strike to Urban in the second quarter.

Jarrod Burns led the Trinity defense with nine tackles on Saturday, though Ben Robinson was a major contributor as well.  Robinson had eight total tackles, picking up six solo stops and 3.0 tackles for loss.  He had a pair of sacks in the game, totaling 24 yards lost on the two plays.  Robinson also forced a fumble and recorded two pass breakups.

Garrett Biel, who leads the nation in field goals, kicked his second field goal of the day as time expired, finishing off a thrilling victory.  More importantly, that field goal breaks the Trinity single season record, giving Biel 16 this season.  The previous record was set by Peter Licalzi during the 2007 season.

Trinity travels to Sherman, Texas, next weekend, facing off against Austin College in the season finale.
