Trinity Tigers Shut out Sewanee in Saturday SCAC Action

San Antonio – The Trinity Tigers shut out the Sewanee: University of the South Tigers 40-0 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at E.M. Stevens Stadium.
Trinity improved to 5-1 and 2-1 SCAC, while Sewanee dropped to 0-5 and 0-3 SCAC.

The Tigers, who lead the series 19-4 and took the 17th straight game against Sewanee, limited their Tennessee opponents to 42 total yards (22 rushing and 20 passing). It marked the first time that Trinity yielded fewer than 100 yards in a game since a 45-0 win over Sewanee in 1998. Trinity's last shutout was a 17-0 win over Rhodes last season.

Trinity, which led 30-0 on four touchdowns and a safety by halftime, produced 218 rushing yards and 97 passing, for 315 total yards.

Senior running back Chris Baer rushed 11 times for 92 yards, and two touchdowns. He scored the game's first touchdown on a rush from 30 yards out, then added a second touchdown on a one-yard rush in the second. Baer now has over 1,800 rushing yards in his career, becoming the 10th Tiger player to reach the milestone.

Sophomore quarterback Patrick Dickinson completed 9-16 passing for 89 yards and one touchdown. Dickinson completed a 26-yard TD pass to senior wide receiver Caleb Urban in the second quarter, and also rushed three times for 14 yards.

Urban snagged three passes for 44 yards, had two kickoff returns for 32 yards, and rushed twice for 24 yards to finish with a total of 99 yards in the game.

First-year kicker Garrett Biel booted his 11th field goal of the season, a 33-yard score through the uprights in the third period. Biel came into the game as the Division III leader in field goals/game.

Senior running back Al Furlow had six rushing attempts for 68 yards, and a touchdown of 32 yards.

First-year punter Kyle Trella recorded five punts for a total of 244 yards, including punts of 61 and 60 yards. His average of 48.8 yards/punt breaks a 46-year old school record for a single game. The previous record of 45.6 yards/punt (minimum of five punts) was set by Jim Underwood against Hardin-Simmons in 1963.

Sophomore defensive lineman Jonathan Alexander had a standout game defensively for Trinity, recording five tackles (four solo) overall, and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also had a quarterback sack and scored a safety in the second quarter. Senior linebacker Dennis Grebe recorded seven tackles (two solo) and one quarterback hurry.

Kyle Coats, also a senior linebacker, had six tackles (two solo), while sophomore defensive back Tyler Barrett had the game’s lone interception - which he returned 31 yards to the one, falling just short of a defensive touchdown.

Trinity continues its SCAC campaign next Saturday in Greencastle, Ind., against DePauw University. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Eastern time. Currently, DePauw is 4-1 overall and 3-1 in SCAC play.
