San Antonio - Trinity baseball players Christian Muscarello and Ryan Lucero have been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week.
The Tiger duo led the team to four wins last week, which included a three-game SCAC weekend sweep of Southwestern University. Muscarello was named the Hitter of the Week, while Lucero was the Pitcher of the Week.
Muscarello batted .615 (8-13) to lead the Tiger offensive attack, and also posted a team-best .688 on-base percentage after drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch twice. He scored six runs for the Tigers, and drove in two more. Muscarello had a double, triple, and home run among his eight hits last week, bumping his slugging percentage up to 1.077.
Against Southwestern, Muscarello went 3-4 in each of the last two games, scoring three runs and driving in one in the series finale. He had three multi-hit games for the week, and has now had nine for the season.
Overall, Muscarello is second on the team with a .431 batting average, connecting on 22 hits in 51 at-bats this season. He leads the team with 19 runs scored an on-base percentage of .500 this year.
Lucero pitched a complete-game shutout to start off the SCAC weekend series against Southwestern on Saturday afternoon, earning his second Pitcher of the Week honor.
Lucero went the distance in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, allowing just four hits and striking out eight batters in the seven-inning game. It marked his first shutout of the season, and it is the second time this year that he has struck out eight or more batters.
For the season, Lucero is 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA for the Tigers. He pitched his first complete game and his first shutout this week, and has allowed just six earned runs in 31.1 innings of work. Lucero has struck out 32 batters against just seven walks, and is holding the opposition to a .191 batting average on the year.
