Legendary Trinity Baseball Coach Celebrates Birthday Over Holiday Weekend
San Antonio - Houston Wheeler, a long-time Trinity baseball coach and member of Trinity's Athletics Hall of Fame, celebrated his 92nd birthday on Friday.
Coach Wheeler was the Tiger baseball coach from 1963-1985 and is Trinity's all-time leader with 377 victories. He was selected as part of the inaugural class of the Trinity Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.
Wheeler is a native of San Antonio who graduated from Trinity in
1941, earning his Bachelor of Arts in business
administration. He was the captain of the football team as a
student-athlete, and was an All-Conference selection in
basketball.
As the Tiger skipper, Wheeler led the team to five Southland Conference (SLC) Championships (1964, 1965, 1966, 1969, and 1973), and appearances in the playoffs in 1969, 1972, and 1973. Wheeler was the SLC Coach of the Year in 1965 and 1968.
Tim Scannell will begin his 13th season as the current Tiger head coach in the upcoming school year, and needs just three more wins to tie Coach Wheeler for the school record. Coach Scannell is already the school's career leader in winning percentage, amassing a record of 374-163 in his career - a winning percentage of .696.
The 2010 Tiger team finished the year with a 32-9 overall record, winning the team's seventh conference title since 1990. Coach Scannell has led the team to five SCAC Championships since taking over in 1999.
