Tiger Baseball Blanked by Whitworth in NCAA Playoffs
McMinnville, Oregon - Trinity's baseball team lost a 12-0 NCAA Playoff game in a rematch against Whitworth University on Friday night.
The Tigers fell to 36-11 on the season, which is the first loss of the Regional Tournament for the team. Trinity defeated Whitworth 8-3 yesterday, and beat Coe 2-0 in the opening NCAA Playoff game.
Whitworth opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning, sparked by a two-run double with just one out. In the fifth, the Pirates added six more runs to take full command of the game.
Trinity had seven total hits in the game, but could not score against Whitworth starter Spencer Ansett. The Tiger pitching staff gave up 11 hits and 11 walks in the loss, and Franklin Bay (2-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits through 4.2 innings.
Dominick Robusto was the only Tiger player with more than one hit, going 2-4 on the day. Trinity's offense also left 10 runners on base in the game.
Trinity will face Coe tomorrow at noon, and the winner will take on Whitworth at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the second game will advance to the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.
