Trinity's Jones Selected as SCAC Player of the Week

San Antonio – Trinity University Tigers senior first baseman Evan Jones has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Baseball Player of the Week.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Jones, from Hillsborough, Calif. (Junipero Serra), hit .615 (8-13) in three games last week. Jones hit three home runs during the week, and has cracked five round-trippers in as many games. He drove in 15 runs, and had two doubles and a triple. Jones, who scored six runs, also posted a 1.615 slugging percentage, to go with an on base percentage of .625 (2.240 OPS, on base plus slugging).

Jones pushed his career home run total to 27, just three away from tying the Trinity record. He swatted his 12th homer of the campaign, two shy of equaling the Tigers single-season record of 14.

The Tigers (26-7, 13-4 SCAC), ranked No. 25 nationally by D3baseball.com, are on a seven-game winning streak. Trinity beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 20-7 last week in a non-conference home game. On the road, in Sherman, Texas, the Tigers swept a SCAC series with Austin College 8-2 and 19-3. Trinity won the season series 5-0.

Trinity, in first place in the SCAC West Division, takes on Schreiner Tuesday in Kerrville, Texas; and Texas Lutheran Wednesday in Seguin, Texas; in non-conference games. The Tigers wrap up their regular-season home schedule by hosting second-place Millsaps in three games Saturday and Sunday at E.M. Stevens Field. Saturday’s doubleheader will be played at 1 and 4 p.m., and Sunday’s single game at 1 p.m.

The Tigers previously qualified for the SCAC Championship Tournament April 22-25 at Millington, Tenn. The winner of the six-team, double-elimination tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
