Mike Panozzo Named SCAC Pitcher of the Week

San Antonio - Trinity University Tigers junior right-hander Michael Panozzo of Houston (Clear Lake) has been selected as this season's first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Panozzo was the winning pitcher in Trinity's 8-5 non-conference victory last Sunday over the Schreiner College Mountaineers at Kerrville, Texas. Panozzo (1-0) allowed two runs (none earned), five hits, two walks, and fanned eight batters in seven innings of work.

Trinity won the overall weekend series with Schreiner, splitting a home doubleheader last Saturday at E.M. Stevens Field. The Tigers won the opener 15-10, and the Mountaineers took the second game 9-3. The two teams play again April 13 in Kerrville.

Panozzo amassed a 7-1 record during the 2009 season. He recorded an ERA of 4.25 in 53 innings, and struck out 28 batters.

The Tigers (2-1), led by 12th-year head coach Tim Scannell, travel to Belton, Texas, Wednesday for a 2 p.m. game with Mary Hardin-Baylor. The game was postponed from Tuesday, because of rain and standing water on the Crusaders' field.

Trinity begins its SCAC campaign next Saturday, in a home doubleheader with Austin College at 1 p.m. The two teams will play a single game next Sunday at 1 p.m. In 2009, the Tigers advanced to their 14th SCAC final in 18 seasons.
