Dr. Ronald K. Calgaard
2005 Hall of Fame Class
President of Trinity University, 1979-1999
Believed that a university residential community must have strong
intercollegiate athletics and intramural programs.
Developed and approved plans for the William H. Bell Athletic
Center. Hixon Natatorium was constructed within the Bell Center
facility.
A track and field complex was built, along with construction of the
Jesse H. Jones Recreation Area, consisting of softball, soccer and
intramural fields and a walking track. E.M. Stevens Baseball Field
was renovated.
Led the effort in Trinity's joining the College Athletic Conference
in ‘'88, later renamed the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference.
Trinity won six SCAC President's Trophies - as the best program in
the conference - during Dr. Calgaard's tenure.
Trinity became a powerhouse in the NCAA Division III. Tiger teams
received their first-ever Division III postseason bids under Dr.
Calgaard's leadership.
The Tigers finished ninth in the Division III National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Cup in '99.
Developed a broad-based athletics program for men and women.
Eighteen sports - nine for men and nine for women - were offered to
student-athletes.
The SCAC, with the help of Trinity, began women's championships in
‘'91.
Nine Trinity student-athletes received NCAA Postgraduate
scholarships through '99.
The grade-point average of Trinity student-athletes was 3.1 in
'99.
Dr. Calgaard and his wife Genie were avid fans of Trinity
intercollegiate athletics. They attended most contests when on
campus and strongly supported the coaches and student-athletes.
Developed and approved plans for initial Trinity Athletic Hall of
Fame.
